Sam Simmons is an Australian comedian, and radio and TV personality. He was one of my big ‘finds’ of the 2010 Melbourne Comedy Festival. If you like absurd comedy, you’re bound to love Sam.
This clip was the first thing I saw him do, and was so good that I bought a ticket to his full show. Which I loved. And then saw a second time at the DVD taping.
In 2003, Sam made the finals of Raw Comedy, a competition for emerging comedians in Australia (the finals are televised; heaps of good comedians compete in Raw). Since then, he has performed a dozen shows at the MICF and other Australian comedy festivals, and had shows on Australian radio stations 3RRR, Fox FM, and Triple J (where he is currently).
His gig on Triple J led him to do a series of 5-minute-long videos for the ABC. The Urban Monkey with Murray Foote holds cult status amongst Australian youth (and one time I saw a guy on a train wearing a Murray Foote shirt!).
In 2010, Sam performed two shows at the MICF, his solo show Fail, and The Incident with David Quirk. Fail won the Piece of Wood award (the comics’ choice), and The Incident won the Golden Gibbo (for innovation), making Sam the only comedian at the 2010 MICF to win two awards.
